What is A Doula?

What is a DoulaDoula is a Greek word that means "woman's servant". In ancient times, women giving birth were surrounded by the energy and wisdom of other women who had given birth. Today, certified doulas are not only experienced, but specially trained to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to women in labor. The doula also helps partners to experience the birth more fully, enhancing their participation and comfort level.

We, as Doulas..

  • Know that birth is a key life event for women & their partners.
  • Understand the physiology of birth & the emotional needs of women in labor.
  • Provide emotional, physican, & informational support.
  • Encourage partners' participation by helping reduce anxiety & pressure ("to remember/know everything").
  • Facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner & the clinical care providers, helping women obtain the information they need to make informed decisions.
  • Nurture & protect the mother's birth memory.
Our sole responsibility is to help you with the birth of your baby.
